Building or Purchasing a Home

This diagram shows causes of residential energy waste.

When having a home built for you, consider the benefits of catching problems early.  An infrared scan can ensure proper placement of structural materials and insulation, proper installation of heating and air conditioning, and solid roofing. When purchasing an existing home, many people take into consideration the size, condition, and location of the home.  Here are some items that you may also want to consider:

How insulated is the structure?

Is the electrical system performing as it should?

Are the exterior doors and windows air and water tight?

Are all of the walls near any plumbing dry?

Is there moisture under the flooring that could potentially lead to mold?

These are just a few questions that could be answered with the use of thermal imaging.

Home Warranties

A home warranty is a great form of insurance to have in addition to home owners insurance when the unexpected happens.  For example, when your dishwasher breaks and causes water to go everywhere, the home warranty will cover the dishwasher and your insurance company will cover any damages caused by the water.  The question now is where and how much water damage was caused?  You know that the flooring is wet, but did any of the water penetrate the baseboards and begin to work its way up the wall?  With the help of infrared thermography, any water damage that is visibly unseen will appear in a thermal image.  This allows you to then know the entire amount of damage done so you will be well informed when contacting your warranty and insurance companies.  You may consider contacting the same specialist for a follow-up scan to ensure complete repairs and replacements.

With both commercial and residential construction at an an all time high, these jobs move so fast that problems can arise.  Was the contractor negligent? Maybe. Many times the problems are due to a language barrier, or just a simple oversight.  Whether intentional or not... this is an issue on almost every jobsite.  Grouted fill cells are the structural integrity of a building.  A few of these missed during construction could be the difference if your housed remains standing after the next "BIG" Storm.
