Introduction to Thermal Anomalies
|
Thermal
anomalies are occurrences of
irregular temperatures (conductive,
convection, and radiated losses).
Virtually anywhere in the
building structure where there is a
joint, junction, or opening, there
is potential for air leakage.
With the use of infrared
imaging, one can identify thermal
irregularities in and on the
building structure.
Once the irregularities are
identified, it is important to have
them properly fixed.
Correcting the irregularities can
highly increase building efficiency
and structural integrity.
Excessive air movement
significantly reduces the thermal
integrity
of the structure and is, therefore,
a major contributing factor to
energy consumption in a building.
All windows, attic stairs, scuttle
holes, and exterior doors should
have proper insulation and weather
stripping.
In some cases, you may find
that the integrity of the window
itself is the problem.
Over time, insulated windows
can loose their gas from within the
window.

Insulation is an extremely important
factor when it comes to decreasing
thermal leakage.
Insulation that is improperly
installed, missing, old, or compressed
can lead to air leakage.
Insulating wall switches and outlets can
reduce the amount of unwanted air
movement. Insulating the hot water
heater can greatly reduce thermal loss,
and also help lower your power bill.

With the skyrocketing
cost of fuel, you know your energy bill will
soon follow… With the aid of thermal
imaging, leaky ductwork, compressed or,
missing insulation, poor connections to air
handling equipment can be precisely
identified, so that it can be corrected.
Some problems are not very big but add ten
or so together and you can have quite a bit
of energy loss. Inadequate insulation can be a big
drain on your wallet. Thirty three percent
of you heating and cooling is lost thru your
exterior walls and twenty five percent thru
your roof. Buy having an infrared scan
performed; you will be well informed of the
insulating properties of your structure.
When building or purchasing a home or
before sighing off this is good information
to have, the problem can be rectified,
saving you money and having a structure that
performs as intended. Remember an infrared
scan pays for itself in energy savings. |

Heating and air conditioning leaks are
not always noticeable.
The air handler, duct work,
joints, and connections are prime
suspects for air leakage.
Leaks in these areas can not only
increase your power bill, but can also
cause the unit to run harder and longer
than it should.

Notice how much air is escaping from
the top.
With the light off, you can see
that air is moving through the light
fixture due to a leak in the duct.
